The Sanganai/Hlanganani World Expo 2023, held from October 12 to 14, was an unforgettable experience that showcased the vibrancy and beauty of Zimbabwe. As a travel professional, I had the privilege of participating in this incredible event, which was preceded by a pre-FAM trip that took us on an extraordinary journey through some of Zimbabwe’s most iconic destinations.
Day 1: Arrival in Victoria Falls
Our adventure began on October 7 in the stunning town of Victoria Falls. Tendai warmly welcomed us and escorted us to our accommodations. After a quick refresh, we set off on a peaceful sunset cruise along the Zambezi River, soaking in the breathtaking views. That evening, we experienced the cultural richness of the House of Zulu, setting the tone for the exciting days ahead.
Day 2: The Mighty Victoria Falls
The day began with a visit to the majestic Victoria Falls. The sheer power and beauty of the falls left us in awe. We were joined by travel agents from South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Uganda, Kenya, Nigeria, and India, creating a diverse and enriching group dynamic. After the falls, we enjoyed a lunch and went back to our accommodation for a quick change and headed for a cultural performance, “Simunye, We Are One,” at the Ndlovu Theatre—a true celebration of unity and culture.
Day 3: Exploring Islands and Wildlife
An early morning visit to a lion sanctuary offered a chance to learn about conservation efforts in the region. Following breakfast, we headed to Zambezi Sands for a site inspection and refreshments. A boat ride then took us to Tsowa Safari Island, where we conducted another site inspection and enjoyed a sumptuous lunch. Tsowa quickly became one of my favorite spots, thanks to its serene beauty and exceptional hospitality. We ended the day with dinner and restful overnight accommodations.
Day 4: Hwange Adventures
After breakfast, we left Victoria Falls and stopped for a site inspection at Insika before heading to Hwange. At Forever African Safaris/Iganyana Camps, we were greeted with a heartwarming welcome of songs and dances. The camp offered a unique experience, with wildlife freely roaming the grounds. An afternoon safari drive was followed by a bonfire session and dinner. However, the evening brought a mix-up with room assignments, leading to some anxious moments. Despite the challenges, the support of fellow agents made the night manageable.
Day 5: Morning Safari and Journey to Harare
The day began with a thrilling morning safari where we spotted lions, a highlight of the trip. We then departed for Harare, arriving in the evening for dinner. A group of us decided to explore Harare’s nightlife, adding an energetic end to the day.
Days 6–7: The Expo and Matopo National Park
The Sanganai/Hlanganani World Expo commenced with networking at the expo center. Over the two-day event, I connected with industry professionals and explored business opportunities. On the third day, we visited Matopo National Park, a place rich in history and natural beauty. The day concluded our last day at the Bulawayo Rainbow Hotel before our final night in Zimbabwe.
Day 8: Farewell to Zimbabwe
Our journey concluded with a flight from Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport to Johannesburg. Reflecting on the trip, I felt immense gratitude for the opportunity to experience Zimbabwe’s wonders and connect with fellow travel enthusiasts from around the world.
The Sanganai/Hlanganani World Expo 2023 and the pre-FAM trip were not just professional milestones but also personal highlights. From the breathtaking landscapes of Victoria Falls to the vibrant cultural showcases, this journey reaffirmed the magic of travel and the unparalleled beauty of Zimbabwe.
